Visa types explained

Visa-free. You enter with your passport alone, usually for a set number of days (shown on each page). Border officers can still ask for a return ticket, proof of funds or where you will stay.

ETA (electronic travel authorisation). A short online form and fee before you fly, approved in minutes to a few days — for example Canada's eTA, the U.S. ESTA or the UK ETA. It is not a visa, but airlines check it before boarding.

e-Visa. A visa you apply for online on the destination's official website: upload a photo and a passport scan, pay, and receive the visa by email. Allow several days.

Visa on arrival. You get the visa at the airport or land border when you arrive, usually for a fee; some countries let you register online first to save time.

Visa required. You apply in advance at an embassy, consulate or visa application centre, often in person with documents and sometimes an interview. Start weeks before you travel.
